Week 51 - Spider

  • Being woken up in the night by our burglar alarm this week was pretty frightening. I went downstairs fearing the worst, brandishing a torch, heart pounding. That fear turned to irritation and relief when I found a spider crawling over a motion sensor. It turns out that spiders look like burglars close up.
  • I’ve been promoted at work: I’m now VP Engineering and therefore responsible for all of our engineering teams and people. It’s the first time I’ve had that title, but I think it’s a good reflection of what I do and enjoy: people, process and delivery.
  • The heat is back, sapping all my energy and best intentions. Any home projects were skipped in favour of sitting in front of a fan with windows and curtains closed. It did mean I got to watch a few matches of football on TV, so not all bad.
  • I bought an AirTag-holder for our cat’s collar. Because of the heat she’s been hiding in the garden and I thought it would be fun to be able to locate her. Since setting it up she’s stubbornly staying in sight.
  • Our Sunday plan to avoid the heat was a morning visit to the air-conditioned cinema in nearby Welwyn Garden City to watch “Minions: The Rise of Gru” (boys’ choice). We followed it up with the boys’ first visit to a McDonalds. No hurry to go back, but they loved their Happy Meals and the novelty.
